How the Animal Hospital Mass of Eyes works

This is the one monster where the "correct play" is literally just not engaging โ€” the warning message tells you exactly what not to do, and following that instruction costs you nothing. The Eyedrops pacify option exists for situations where you need to work in that room and can't just avoid looking up indefinitely.

What the Mass of Eyes costs, in sanity you actually have

The raw figure is โˆ’2 to โˆ’5 every 0.5s while you look up. What matters is what that is a fraction of: with no class bought you start a shift on 61 sanity, and reaching zero puts you down โ€” a teammate can revive you with a $1,000 Teddy Bear, but you cannot use one on yourself.

  • As a drain it runs at 4โ€“10 sanity a second, so a full bar lasts somewhere between 6 and 15 seconds depending on how bad the roll is.
  • On a Psychologist every one of those numbers doubles โ€” that class starts at 100% sanity but takes double from everything, so this threat is exactly twice as expensive there.

What you want in your hands for the Mass of Eyes

Worth knowing before you spend a shift carrying the wrong thing: a weapon is the answer to only 3 of the 10 threats in this game. The Mass of Eyes is answered by one item:

Eyedrops

Optional โ€” not looking up costs nothing and works just as well.

When you can expect the Mass of Eyes

The nine threats split into three planning problems. The Mass of Eyes is in the group gated by shift number โ€” it will not appear until a specific shift, so early runs are simply free of it โ€” and once you are past its window it stops being a concern.

The others in that bracket are the Head Banger. Grouping them this way is more useful than a flat list, because a threat you can wait out, a threat you set off yourself and a threat that can arrive unannounced each call for a different habit โ€” and only the last one justifies carrying gear all shift.

Does any class make the Mass of Eyes easier?

One class starts you holding the item this threat responds to, which removes the scramble to find one mid-shift:

  • Head Nurse

at level 3 begins each round with the backpack already full of supplies, which is how you have the consumable before you need it.

One to avoid for this specific fight: the Psychologist doubles every sanity effect in both directions. It starts you at 100% rather than 61%, but it also makes this threat cost twice what the numbers above say โ€” a trade that only pays if you are confident you will not be touched.
